[Personal] A career in Malaysia

If I stay, I would have countless opportunities to amass funds great enough to buy a national bank. If I leave, I would have a life.
---- 3point8 ----

Ever had the feeling that when something happens, it is always the closest ones that would receive the news last. When I had a crack in the cranium when I got my head bumped to the bedrock after being swept away by the strong sea current, it was always my direct family that would get the news well after all my friends knew about it. That is why I do not blog about my personal life because I know there are people reading this blog (including my Alaskan distant aunt).

But this post is an exception. This post is about my life biggest decision. Now in this present time, at this very moment, I have to choose between staying and making a living here in Australia, or return to my home country to Malaysia. [For those who had been following my blog and was wondering if I'm an aussie, I'm not. I'm a Malaysian.]

I've been contemplating this for a long time. Based on my observation and the things people say, there are only a few reasons to why I should make a living here in Australia:
1) Nice weather coupled with fresh air and clean water.
2) Better work rights. (No overtime, no Saturday and Sunday work life)
3) Salary here is reasonably well.
4) Socio-economy is well balanced. There isn't much of a gap between the rich and poor.
Indeed, Australia is the perfect place to be living in.

So, why choose to go back to Malaysia you might ask. I can only think of two reasons:
1) My family is there
2) I'm accustom to the Asian culture.
Even if I combine this two reasons, its not even good enough to outweigh of the first benefit to why I should stay in Australia (nice weather). Then again, I have a difficult time fitting in Austalia. I just want to be go to a place where I belong.

The real reason to why I want to go back to Malaysia is because I want to build my career in a place where I can fit in culturally - either in Malaysia, or Singapore. Though my background is in engineering but it would be ideal if I can get into management consulting or IT consulting because those are the fields that deemed interesting, challenging and its not as repetitive as other profession.

It was difficult for me to get into this job market in Australia because I do not have any relevant experience and Aussies value experience more than they value gold. If I go back to my home country, I just thought that I'd have an advantage considering I graduated from Australia's best engineering university, and that I have close to a year worth of oversea working experience.

Sometimes I still wonder if going back Malaysia is the right decision for me. This thought has been haunting me for a month considering I've already made a lot of bad decisions. I pissed away all my money and I chased off all my friends. I just hope that this decision is not another mistake that I'll regret 38 years down the road. I hope this is my U-turn, my chance to atone for the mistakes I've done.

As of now, I am a job seeker and my priority is to look for a career in Malaysia and Singapore. If you are a headhunter, here is my professional webpage [link] (a copy of my resume is included in that link). Or if you know a headhunter who is seeking for fresh talent, do forward my details to them. Mucho gracias.

Question: How would you advice a fresh graduate who is out in the real world looking to start a career?

Unrelated Stuff: I know I'm self-advertising. But this is a good thing considering I mustered the courage to blog about my personal life (which is rare for me). Plus I want to leverage my existing power of social network and blogs.

Also, I believed in the concept of a 'mysterious blogger' and I stood to my conviction of not revealing my personal information for years. But today, I think I have revealed more of myself in this single post as compared to all my previous 380post combined.

here's a couple of more reason to come back to malaysia:
3) ur buddies are here (me! me! me!)
4) u can catch up with bloggers and attend blogger events
5) u have more freedom in terms of moving around since u most likely have a car (ok so traffic jam sucks, so wat? ur used to it having born and raised there)
6) u can still find food to eat and things during wee hours, and again u have a car to move around
7) i couldnt agree more with point 1,2,3 by Relax. the here are among the cheapest in the world, and luxury is way below wat it shld cost in other developed countries, and it's just started to pick up!

Most of all, if getting a lot of money and have career progression, u can do tat everywhere else, but wats the point of doing so if u werent enjoying life at the 1st place, right?

hey dude..

i understand how u feel.. when u r away from home, no matter where u r, no place beats home (if u r a person who values relationships alot), coz u will oways think about ur frens u have there, and of coz ur family...

from how u describe australia, i think S'pore will be classified as 'no life' to u oso (including me).. hehe.. coz ppl pay u on weekdays only, but some evil bosses expect u to come in on Sat & sun..

ppl in S'pore can be rather realistic... i've known ppl who r pregnant then get sack, coz they will be on leave for 2-3months and the bosses think that it would be more productive to hire other ppl rather than keeping them but they are at home taking care of baby and taking the salary... there r other very realistic examples of bosses in s'pore too.. very sad case.. they r not like the ones in malaysia which r frenly, even though u can still meet such ppl in msia (i mean the evil ones), but i feel that malaysians still emphasize more on relationship, much friendlier, and more true to each other compared to singaporeans... hehe..

nonetheless, wish u the best yea.. hehhe

Happy Chinese New Year in advance..

hope u can come back Msia to spend time wif ur family..

Hello 3point8,

I have been through the same thing and I shall share my experience with you.

when I graduated, i could choose between working in Germany or coming back to Malaysia.

If I choose to stay in Germany, I can work with very nice pay and can retire rich in 2 to 8 years time.

If I stay in Malaysia, I ccan retire rich only after 5 to 15 years.

This was my original plan

http://kclau.com/retirement/how-a-fresh-graduate-plan-to-retire-in-8-years/

I came back to Malaysia eventually.

In malaysia, there's its unique financial opportunity not available in Europe:

1. Stock has more room for growth. Good for long time investors

2. no capital gain taxes

3. excellent for property investing

4. I can write a book and earn royalty

5. Many options for side income

6. Language and culture

7. I prefer the food and weather here

8. free from winter

9. Can meet friends and bloggers

10. Still got opportunity to become jutawan, although a bit slower than working in oversea.

I hope this helps.

have fun!

Can't help but to take a look at your resume. Honestly it's nice and simple. I like it.

Life is about give and take. You take something you give up another thing, fair and square.

I believe you have something in mind, just that you need people to re-assure that your decisions are "right".

I'm not sure what Malaysia means to you but to me it's a place I call home, the place I love (even though I don't quite love the current government) and the place I would die for. So basically it's more than just wealth, fortune and tangible achievement.

Have the courage and do whatever you must. Something will only be bad if you think you have made a bad decision.

LOL, reminds me of "The Road Not Taken"...

Good luck and take care! =)

Never left Malaysia except for holidays but my small legal firm already made it's first million in 2006 after it opened in 2000. Then it is downhill a bit but just goes to show, if it is about money, it's everywhere...

Hei dude..Many companies here in Malaysia stop taking graduates oledi larr..unless doing sales. I think if cause of world crisis, it's better come back Malaysia as u are like "Malaysia's Indonesian" in Australia(immigrant)..And the opportunity is high to get kicked out.

FYI, my company is searching for engineers. If u interested just email/msn me lar.

Happy Chinese New Year!!

I would really advise you to go Australia because its a better place to work. You get better career advancement there and well maybe if you're tired, you can move back to Malaysia.

Hey Kif..
I'm not sure how's Australia like. But to me, as long as you are at a place where you heart wants to be, you will make things right and do it greater, because your heart's in it. :)

When you enjoy, things will get better and better. It might be harder to start off at Malaysia, but it will definitely be greater when we learn to indulge in what we love, and to be determined to do it better - which will lead us to greater heights.

It's fine to be unable to make decision as everyone doesn't know what the future lies ahead. We won't know that coming back to Malaysia will be better, and we can't assure ourselves that being at Australia is certainly the best decision afterall. Just balance well the pros and cons and most importantly, what you want.

I believe you can get what you want wherever you are, if you have the heart and determination to find it. :)

It's nice sharing personal stuffs over here 3point8, it makes readers felt closer to the blogger. :)

all the best!

The key in working is make sure you are happy dude.

You can't deal with unnecessary stress for the rest of your life. It is either you love the job or you love the people you are working with. Probably love the cash? Choose wisely.

Hmm...you see before I graduated I had to offer with good remuneration and great career advancement opportunity! But in the end...I decided to stay in Malacca with my family! Although the pay is lower...but I believe in the long run I'll be happier! Because I value my family over anything else. And I believe it's my duty and responsibility to be by their side.

Anyway I wanna wish you happy chinese cow year! May the God of prosperity bless with you with lots of money. And may you always be in good health! =)

Getting the list done, pros & cons, is a good way to start. But many times, I find myself making decisions, based on the list that less attract me... because at the end of the day, it's our satisfaction on the plate. NOt the written black & white.

See you soon!

Hey KIFFERS! I missed you bud. You never replied to my last email, or maybe it didn't send right; I'm not sure. I just wanted to pop in and say that I hadn't seen you when I saw this post and oh dear, I can feel your, I'm not sure of the right word to put there. But I feel you.

My advice, come to Canada. You have my address. Come chill with us. (aha, "chill"? Stereotypical-Canada joke). Really though, I'm a man of few words recently but know that I wish you the best and that it means more than it sounds.

From your description, spore is realistic. But still spore will be good for my career. They say that if one can survive spore, they can survive anywhere in the world. I suppose 2~3years of torture is bearable.

[Relax]

Coming from another malaysian in US, been here 15 years,

if you can get work in AUS then stay for a while. But in your mind always remind yourself that you will go home, set a dateline like 5-6 years. Just make sure you don't get marry or attached to anyone in AUS, if that happen, you will never able to leave.

Your thinking will change as you get older, when you are young you like to see what is out there, but as you get older, you will like to go back to you Home, Malaysia.

Just don't look back afterward, and keep think "Should Have"..etc..

Trust me.. I wish someone giving me this advise 15 years ago..
